It ran over my foot. I hopped in the last car with Brett and the train chugged along, leaving Amy and her youngest, Jordie, behind. Amy was crying out ” Stop, my children are on there without me.”Of course they had me, but the memory still haunts little Kaci. However, that’s not why I needed the hip surgery.This year’s Kansas State Fair opens Sept. 8, and our first question has to do with a popular annual event at the fair.Q: With the fair approaching I always enjoy the marching bands on Main Street. My problem is I always come upon them by accident. Can you tell me what days and time the bands will be marching?On Sept. 11 and 12, the bands will begin marching downtown between 8 and 9 a.m.On Wednesday, Anthea Bryant, a fair spokeswoman, said it would be about 8 a.m.“We are taking registration through Sept. 4, and on Tuesday, Sept. 5, we will have the completed schedule with times posted at www.kansasstatefair.com. Click on fair, then education and you will see the marching bands schedule."Q: You had an article a few months ago on the little chapel on K-150 south of Marion. I passed by there a few days ago and it seems to be in upheaval. Just was wondering what had happened.I remember the question about a year ago with the little chapel. Back then we reported that David Madden, Osawatomie, owned the land and wanted to offer travelers along K-150 some spiritual reflection as they drove through the Flint Hills. She was born January 5, 1938, in Kinsley, the daughter of Lawrence O. and Eva T. (Cullen) Strawn.Joyce was a homemaker and sign language interpreter. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson. On May 28, 1955, Joyce married Melvin L. Herrell in Hutchinson. He died February 8, 2016.She is survived by: children, Vicky Pahl (John) of Pretty Prairie, Joe Herrell (Wendy) of Hutchinson, Greg Herrell (Julie) of Hutchinson, Teresa Frieb (Dan) of Olmitz, Doug Herrell of Pretty Prairie, Brent Herrell (Brandi) of Hutchinson, Sara Brubaker (Ron) of Hutchinson; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way; brothers, Larry Strawn (Ruby), Don Strawn (Sharon), Jim Strawn (Linda), all of Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Diana Strawn of Hutchinson, Carol Close of Wildomar, California, and Charlotte Herrell of Mitchell, Nebraska.Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; brother, Danny Strawn; brothers-in-law, Don Herrell and Paul Close.Parish rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday, August 27, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church with Father Ned J. Blick officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
